<< Nepal -- Nepal Questions

 Nepal

Please note: The Ministry in Nepal has limited every agency to only 10 families for 2009. So any family interested in a Nepal adoption during 2009 will need to be sure that they contract with an agency that still has some 2009 openings. It is expected that it will be completely open in 2010, once the Ministry sees how these first cases progress.

Q:  What age of children are available for adoption?
A:  The children available for adoption through our Nepal program range in age from 6 months to 10 years old at the time of referral. Families must adopt a child younger than the youngest child currently in the home (if applicable).

Q:  Are both boys and girls available?
A:  Both boys and girls available for adoption.  The children in Nepal are absolutely beautiful with tan complexions, dark hair and dark eyes.

Q:  What are the age restrictions for adoptive parents?
A:  Adoptive parents may be up to 55 years of age.
Couples who adopt from Nepal must be infertile.
Couples must be married for at least 4 years and be a minimum of 30 years old and no older than 55 years old.  The age difference between the child to be adopted and the adoptive mother or parents must be at least 30 years.

Q:  Is there a limit to the number of children a family can have, already in the home?
A:  There is no limit as to the number of children a family has in the home, however:

-  If a family has boys, they must adopt a girl.

-  If a family has girls, they must adopt a boy.

-  Families with both boys and girls in the home, may not adopt from Nepal.

Q:  Are siblings available through this program?
A:  No

Q:  Can I adopt more than one unrelated child at a time?
A:  No. You may only adopt one child at a time through Nepal.

Q:  What are the travel requirements for this program?
A:   One or both parents must travel to Nepal for 2-3 weeks, to bring their child home.
If only one parent travels, they will take a Power of Attorney for the other parent (if applicable).

Q:  Can single women adopt through this program?
A:  Single women may also adopt, but they do not have to be infertile! This makes it a fantastic program for single women! Single unmarried, widowed or divorced women may adopt if they are between 30 and 55 years old.

Q:  Approximately, how long is the wait for a referral of a child, after my dossier has been sent to the country?
A:  We will get an approximate time frame for referrals once the program is open longer.

Q:  After I accept a child's referral, approximately how long until my adoption is complete?
A:  We are being told it will take approximately 12 months to complete an adoption from Nepal after the dossier has been submitted and the family has accepted a referral.

Q:  Approximately, how long would the adoption process take, from the time I contract with IFS, until my child is home?
A:  This can vary greatly depending on how quickly a family completes their dossier, accepts a referral, how busy the Ministry offices are, etc, but it could take approximately 14-18 months.

Q:  Are there reference families I can talk to who are adopting through this program?
A:  Yes.  Although we have not had a family complete an adoption through this program yet, we have many families who have adopted through other IFS programs that will be glad to share their experience with you.
