Adoption from Guatemala

*Even though this is Intl' Family Services info it will give you the basics on this program.

Guatemala Program Description

Our Guatemala program is a relatively easy program.  IFS works closely with reputable attorneys and coordinators in Guatemala City who have been involved with adoptions for many years.  The children we place either live with caring foster families for the duration of the adoption process or in excellent children's homes where they receive plenty of one-on-one attention.

Referrals include medical reports and photos of the children.  The children typically have dark hair, dark eyes, and olive skin.

Requirements for Adopting Parents:
- Parents must be between 25-50 years old, but exceptions can be made
- Singles may adopt

Travel:
Parents can choose to travel once, twice, or not at all.
- Traveling twice - If parents visit their child once before the adoption is complete and once to pick up their child, their child will come to the U.S. on an IR-3 visa, and re-adoption is not necessary
- Traveling once / Escort option- Parents can chose to travel just once to pick up their child or choose to an escort from IFS to bring back their child.  In these cases, the child will travel on an IR-4 visa, and re-adoption in the States in necessary.
Travel Time
- First trip - as long as the parent wants to stay and visit with their child.  Usually one weekend to one week
- Second trip - at least 4 days to get the child's visa.

Expenses:
- IFS Application and Processing Fee - $4,250
- Foreign (Service and Support) Fee - $21,500 - $23,000
The Service and Support Fee can be paid in two installments.  The first half is due upon child addeptance.  The second half is due before court.
- Foster Care - $300 per month from time of child acceptance, first 6 months ($1,800) due upon child acceptance
- US Visa - payable to U.S. Embassy at end of adoption process - $380
- Child's Embassy Physical Exam - $85
- All travel and travel related expenses for you (or escort) and your child
- Child and birth mother's DNA test - $450
- Fees for document certifications and authentications

IFS requires a refundable deposit of $250 per required Post-Placement Report and Registration or finalization to be collected, except where noted in section 5.11 of the Contract.  Some countries require that your adopted child be "registered" in their country, a formality that helps foreign authorities stay abreast of child and family developments.  Upon completion and submission to IFS of each PPR or Registration, that equivalent amount of deposit will be returned to the client.  Post-Placement deposits are due and payable at the time you sign your Child Acceptance Agreement.

At the time of writing this document the following programs required the Post-Placement Reports listed below.  Check with your IFS representative, IFS program director or the IFS post-placement report supervisor for current PPR requirements.  Thus this list should serve as an example only.

        Guatemala
Requires reports at 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, 3 years; Only the 6 month report must be written by social worker.  The other 3 can be written reports by the family. ($1,000 PPR refundable deposit)
